Herb and Dorothy Vogel in their modest Manhattan apartmen…
Herb and Dorothy
POLITE APPLAUSE Documentary. Directed by Megumi Sasaki. (Not rated. 89 minutes. At the Lumiere in San Francisco and Shattuck Cinemas in Berkeley.)
Herb and Dorothy Vogel just don’t compute as internationally known art collectors. She’s a retired librarian, he worked nights at the post office, and they have always lived in a modest one-bedroom apartment in Manhattan. Yet they amassed an extraordinary collection of modern American art, eventually donating 1,000 pieces – just part of their holdings – to a grateful National Gallery.
