A. Bierstadt Lithograph in original frame

Question posed to Joe Rosson in his column:

This lithograph is 19 1/2 inches by 27 1/2 inches and signed by A. Bierstadt (German?). It is in the original frame. Can you help me with the value?

Answer by Joe Rosson:

In a way Albert Bierstadt (1830-1902) was German, but he was also one of the most important American painters of the last half of the 19th century, and his original paintings can bring huge dollars when they are sold. Bierstadt was born in Solingen, Germany, but he and his family moved to the United States in 1833 and settled for a time in New Bedford, Mass., which is perhaps best known as a whaling community.
