The difference between Art and Design

The subject of what separates art and design is convoluted and has been debated for a long time.

Artists and designers both create visual compositions using a shared knowledge base, but their reasons for doing so are entirely different.

Some designers consider themselves artists, but few artists consider themselves designers.

So what exactly is the difference between art and design?

Art to me is spontaneous and happens with inspiration; while, in my opinion, design is a thought out process with a definite starting point and a foregone conclusion of what one will end up with.

Really good points on the difference between art and design. I like the statement that an artist could never be yelled at for intepreting or making a concept whereas a designer could be. An artist is encouraged to be unique and think out of the box, not so for a designer. Interesting statements.

I have always liked the definition of art as being the intent of the creator. If the creator intended it to be art then it is.
